Here’s another quick and easy gift idea for a Teacher. It’s a cute chalkboard subway art sign that can hang on the wall or sit on a shelf or desk. I used vinyl to make this sign, but it would also be cute to create a stencil and use chalk markers instead of paint.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED
- Chipboard Sign (I found mine the Dollar Tree)
- Chalkboard Vinyl or Black Vinyl
- Vinyl (I used red, green, yellow, and white)
- Transfer Tape
- Paint & Brush
- Sandpaper
- Weeding Tool
- Application Tool
- Electronic cutter (cricut explore, silhouette or other cutter)
- Cut File (available for free in my resource library)
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO
I found a simple chunky chipboard sign at the Dollar Tree that I used for this project. If you can’t find something similar, you could just use a piece of wood. Start by lightly sanding the sign to remove the glossy finish.
Then paint the top and sides with a few coats of black paint.
Once the paint is dry, trace the sign onto a piece of chalkboard vinyl.
Cut the chalkboard vinyl down to size. Remove the vinyl backing and apply to the top of the sign.
Open the design in your software program. Measure the sign and size the vinyl design accordingly. Add registration marks to make layering easy.

Cut out the different colors with your cutting machine and weed away the excess vinyl.
Use transfer tape to layer the design.

Once the design is layered, remove the vinyl backing.
Center the vinyl on the sign and rub over all the letters to get them to stick to the chalkboard vinyl. Then, remove the transfer tape.
Now, you’ve got a super cute gift for your teacher!
