HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED
- Wood Circle (Mine is approx. 12″) (I got it here)
- Paint and Brushes (I used white, red, and black acrylic paint)
- Sand Paper
- Rope for Hanging
- Vinyl (Color Doesn’t Matter)
- Application Tool
- Transfer Tape
- Weeding Tool
- Rope & Staple gun
- Christmas Embellishments (bow, pine, etc.)
- Electronic cutter (cricut explore, silhouette or other cutter)
- Cut File (available for free in my resource library)
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO
STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE FREE SVG FILE
The first thing you’ll need to do is get the free SVG file you’ll use for this project. I keep all the SVG files I use for the projects I make in my SVG Library. These SVG files work with Cricut and Silhouette machines, as well as many others. This library is open to everyone and is free! You can access the library here. Look for the file Welcome with Snowflakes. It will either be under the most recent projects/cut files or under the Christmas category-25 Days of Craftmas 2019 – Day 21.
STEP 2: PREPARE WOODEN CIRCLE
Sand the wooden circle so it’s nice and smooth.
Then paint it white. You’ll probably need to do a couple of coats.
STEP 3: PREPARE THE VINYL DESIGN
While the paint is drying, let’s get the vinyl ready. Open the design in your software program and size it to fit on your wooden circle. Then, add a circle around the design to turn it into a stencil. If you’re using a 12″ circle, you can make the designs 10.75″ and make the circle 11.5″.

How to Make a Vinyl Stencil in Silhouette Studio
I used Oracal 631, but you can also use Stencil Vinyl or Oracal 631.
When everything is sized correctly, you can cut the vinyl with your Cricut or Silhouette.
Once everything is cut, weed away the excess vinyl. Since this is a stencil, you’ll want to remove the letters and shapes.
Cut a piece of transfer tape a little larger than the design. Place the design onto the transfer tape.
Rub over the top of the designs with a scraper.
Then, trim off the excess transfer tape.
STEP 4: STENCIL THE WOODEN CIRCLE
After the white paint is dry, it’s time to apply the vinyl design. Flip the design over and pull off the vinyl backing.
Center the design onto the wood and press into place.
Rub over the design with a scraper to help it stick to the wood.
Then, pull off the transfer tape and rub over the design one more time with a scraper.
Paint the wooden circle with one more coat of white paint. This is to help prevent bleeds.
Once the white paint is dry, paint the circle red. It’s best to do 2-3 light coats of red, rather than 1 thick, heavy coat.
When the red paint is dry to the touch, carefully pull off the vinyl.
Use a weeding tool to pull out the little pieces of vinyl.
STEP 5: ADD FINISHING TOUCHES TO THE CIRCLE
Flip the sign over and staple or glue on a piece of rope for hanging the sign.
Next, dip cheap bristle brush in black paint and wipe most of the paint off. Then, lightly drag the brush across the sign. We’re going for light streaks across the sign, so just let the bristles barely touch the surface of the wood.
Glue on a couple of pieces of pine bough to the top of the circle.
Then, add a pretty Christmas bow.
