Today, I’m showing you how to make this cute Bless Our Nest House Shaped Sign. I found the original house at Dollar Tree and knew it just needed a little makeover to turn it into a cute decoration for the home. This is a fun and easy project and I’m excited to show you how to make your own. Read on for the full tutorial.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED
- Dollar Tree House (Similar to this)
- Black Vinyl (I got mine here)
- Transfer Tape
- Weeding Tool
- Scraper
- Sandpaper
- White & Blue Paint and Brushes
- Mini Grapevine Wreath (I got mine here)
- 1.25″ Nail and Hammer
- Glue Gun and Glue
- Small Wood Piece for the Stand (approx. 1.75″ x 6.5″- I used a yardstick)
- Spanish Moss
- Electronic cutter (Cricut Explore & Maker Machines, Silhouette Machines, or many other digital cutters)
- Cut File – Bless Our Nest BA2160 (click here to get the SVG file for free from my free SVG Library)
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO
STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE FREE SVG FILE
The first thing you’ll need to do is get the free SVG file you’ll use for this project. I keep all the SVG files I use for the projects I make in my SVG Library. These SVG files work with Cricut and Silhouette machines, as well as many others. This library is open to everyone and is free! You can access the library here. Look for the file called Bless Our Nest BA2160. It will be listed under the Every Day Category.
STEP 2: CUT AND WEED VINYL DESIGN
Open the design in your software program and resize it to fit your small piece of wood. My house measures about 5.5″ across, so I resized the design to be about 3.75″ wide. When everything has been sized correctly, you can cut the designs with your Cricut or Silhouette.
Remove the vinyl from your cutting mat and trim off any unused vinyl. Weed away the excess vinyl from around the design.
Use the weeding tool to help remove the excess vinyl from inside the letters and birds.
Cut a piece of transfer tape and place it sticky side up on your surface. Then place the vinyl on top of the transfer tape and smooth it down.
Rub over the design firmly with your scraper tool.
Then, trim off the excess transfer tape and vinyl backing.
STEP 3: PAINT THE WOOD PIECES
Next, we’re going to work on the wood pieces. Use your spatula tool to remove the roof from the house.
If your house has a sticker, you’ll also want to remove that.
Lightly sand the front and back of the house.
You might need to tap in the nails from the roof so they are flush with the house.
Paint on several light coats of white paint on the back of the house (the side without the quote).
You’ll also want to paint the small wood piece that will be the base of the sign.
Flip the sign over and paint the other side. This will be the back of the sign so you need just enough paint to cover the quote. Let the paint dry completely.
STEP 4: FINISH THE SIGN
Next, add some glue to the back of the roof piece and press it back onto the house shape.
Grab your little grapevine wreath and position that about an inch under the roof. Hammer in a nail so the wreath can hang on it.
Now, grab the vinyl design and remove the vinyl backing.
Center the design on the house.
Rub over the design with your scraper.
Then, carefully pull off the transfer tape.
Add some glue to the bottom of the house.
Center the house on the wood base and press it down.
Now, Grab a handful of Spanish moss and glue it around the base of the sign.
Trim off the excess moss. Check for bare spots on the base and add more moss if necessary.
Add a little glue to the back of the wreath to keep it in place.
And that’s it, this project is complete.
