Welcome to day 21 of my 25 days of Craftmas series. Today, I’m showing you how to make this Buffalo Plaid Christmas Wreath Sign. I love the look of the black and white plaid background with the pop of color of the wreath and sign.  Read on for the full tutorial.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE FREE SVG FILE

The first thing you’ll need to do is get the free SVG file you’ll use for this project.  I keep all the SVG files I use for the projects I make in my SVG Library.  These SVG files work with Cricut and Silhouette machines, as well as many others.  This library is open to everyone and is free!  You can access the library here. Look for the file called Tis the Season BA2121. It will be listed under the Craftmas 2021 Category-Day 25.

STEP 2: CUT AND WEED VINYL DESIGN

Open the design in your software program and resize it to fit on your piece of wood.  My wood measures about 3.75″ x 7″, so I sized my design to 3″ high and left the width proportional.

When everything has been sized correctly, you can cut the designs with your Cricut or Silhouette.

Remove the vinyl from your cutting mat and trim off any unused vinyl.

Weed away the excess vinyl from around the design.

Use a weeding tool to pull out the small pieces left inside the letters.

Cut a piece of transfer tape and place it sticky side up on your surface. Then place the vinyl on top of the transfer tape and smooth it down.

Rub over the designs firmly with your scraper tool.

Then, trim off the excess transfer tape and vinyl backing.

STEP 3: PREPARE THE WOOD PIECES

Remove the wood backing from the frame.

Use your paintbrush to measure how many stripes you can fit across the sign.

Then, add a pencil line for each black vertical stripe you want to make.  I figured I could fit about 7 stripes (3 black and 4 white), so I drew 3 lines for the black strips down the sign.

Repeat these steps for the horizontal stripes.

Before you paint the stripes on the wood, try a test stripe on a scrap piece of wood or paper.  You’ll want to dip your brush in the paint and then dab some of the paint off.  Lightly drag the brush across the surface.

When you’re happy with the look, you can paint the stripes on your sign. I started with the vertical stripes. The stripes don’t have to be perfect, just as straight as you can make them.

Then, I painted the horizontal stripes.

Rotate your board 180 degrees and brush on the stripes again.  This should even out all the stripes.

While the black paint is drying, let’s work on the little wooden sign.  Start by drilling a small hole in the middle of the right and left sides.

Lightly sand the wood and then paint it white.  My sign took about 3-4 coats.

STEP 4: APPLY THE VINYL DESIGN TO THE WOOD

After the white paint has dried, we’re going to apply the vinyl to the sign.

Grab the design and pull off the vinyl backing.

Position the design on the wood. Do your best to make the design straight and centered.

Then rub over the vinyl with a scraper.

Carefully pull off the transfer tape.

STEP 5: ASSEMBLE THE SIGN

Now, we’re going to assemble the sign. Start by cutting a 12″ piece of wire and threading about 3″ through one of the holes on the wooden sign.

Wrap the wire around the back of the wreath and through the other hole on the sign.

Trim off all but about 1″ of the excess wire and then twist the excess around the tip of the plyers to make a little curly q.  This should stop the wire from pulling through the hole.  Do the same thing on the other side.

Thread a piece of ribbon through the top of the wreath.  Put the ends together to form a long loop.

Place the wreath on the wood backing and then put the backing into the frame

Press the metal tabs back down so the backing is secure.

You can pull down on the ribbon until the wreath hangs at about the center of the sign. Use a staple gun or hot glue gun to secure the ribbon to the back of the sign.

Flip the sign back over and adjust the little wooden sign and wreath until they look good.

And that’s it! This sign is finished.
