Today, I’m showing you how easy it is to make this cute mini wooden sign for the 4th of July.  This is a fun project to make with a laser cutter and I just love how it turned out.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO

STEP 1: SET UP AND CUT WOOD PIECES

Every brand of laser cutter/software is going to have a slightly different setup process.  I’m gonna share how I set this project up using Xtool Creative Space.

After opening Creative Space, I first selected my material (which is 3mm Basswood Plywood). I placed my wood piece inside the box, set the distance, and marked the edges of the wood.

Next, I brought in my design.  I resized it to about 4″ wide.  Then, I added a border around the design that was 5″ x 5″ and 1/2″ wide. I also created a 5″ square and set everything to cut.  Then, I sent the design to the machine to cut..The laser did all the work of cutting everything out. I love watching the laser at work.

This is what it looked like after everything had been cut.I saved the piece inside the border to use as a template.

STEP 2: PAINT THE PIECES

I painted all the pieces with acrylic paint.

I really like the edges of the wood to stay dark so I tried to only paint the tops of the pieces.

STEP 3: ASSEMBLE THE SIGN

First, I glued the border onto the square.

Next, I placed the template inside the border (I didn’t use any glue).

I used a paintbrush to add glue to the back of the wood pieces.

Then, I placed the piece inside the template.

Once all the pieces (except the star) were in place and the glue had time to dry, I removed the template.

Finally, I glued the star on top of the firework.

And that’s all there is to making this cute patriotic sign.  You could lean this sign against the wall on a shelf, place it on a tiered tray, or add an adhesive hook so you can hang it on the wall.
