A few years ago, I made this a really cute door hanger fore Valentine’s Day.  Somehow, during our move, it got lost.  Since it was fairly easy to make, and I really love the shape, I decided I was going to make a new one, with an updated design.

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO

DOWNLOAD THE FREE SVG FILE

The first thing you’ll need to do is get the free SVG file you’ll use for this project.  I keep all the SVG files I use for the projects I make in my SVG Library.  These SVG files work with Cricut and Silhouette machines, as well as many others.  This library is open to everyone and is free! You can access the library here. Look for the file called Funky Heart. It will be listed under the Valentine’s category.

I used a piece of 10″ pine for the door hanger, but you can use whatever you have and size your design accordingly.  If your wood isn’t big enough to fit the entire heart, you’ll need to slice the heart shape in half in your software program.  Use your cutter and cut the design out of vinyl (You could also use paper, but I think it would be easier with vinyl).  Then, place the two pieces of vinyl on  your board and use a jigsaw to cut out the shapes.

Sand and paint both sides a soft pink color.

While that is drying, cut, weed, and apply transfer tape to the vinyl stencils. Make the stencils a little bit bigger than the heart.

When the paint is dry, remove the backing off the vinyl and apply it to the heart.

Use an Exacto knife to trim the vinyl stencil down closer to the size of the heart,  Then,  remove the transfer tape.

Paint one more light coat of pink paint.  This prevents the next color from bleeding under the stencil.

Then, I paint on the darker pink.

Once that is dry to the touch, carefully pull up the vinyl.

Use wood glue to attach the two pieces together.

To finish it off, drill a hole in each side and add wire and ribbon for hanging.
