Welcome to day 13 of my 25 Days of Craftmas series! Wood block letters are really easy to make and they look so cute when they’re finished. But, my letters would tip over all the time. Sometimes, just walking into a room would cause enough movement that my blocks would fall over. So, I decided to solve this problem by adding hinges and connecting all the letters.
I thought this projects was pretty easy one, even screwing on all the hinges went really quick. And, I think it turned out super cute!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED
- Wood (6 – 5″ x 3.5″ pieces)
- Vinyl (I used White)
- Mini Hinges and screwdriver
- Paint (I used true red, yellow-green, kelly green) and brushes
- Craft Embellishments (Optional)
- Transfer Tape
- Electronic cutter (cricut explore, silhouette or other cutter)
- Cut File (available for free in my resource library)
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO
The first thing you’ll need to do is get the free SVG file you’ll use for this project. I keep all the SVG files I use for the projects I make in my SVG Library. These SVG files work with Cricut and Silhouette machines, as well as many others. This library is open to everyone and is free! You can access the library here. Look for the file called Jingle. It will either be listed under the Christmas category-25 Days of Craftmas 2018 – Day 13.
You’ll need 6 wood blocks that are approx. 3.5″ x 5″. Once you’ve got your blocks cut and sanded, it’s time to paint. You’ll want to paint 2 red, 2 dark green, and 2 light green.
While the paint is drying, open the design in your cutting software. Size the letters to about 4.25″ tall. Keep the width proportional. Cut out the vinyl, weed away the excess, and apply transfer tape.
After the paint is dry, lightly sand the edges and surfaces of the wood blocks to give it a distressed look.
Remove any paint debris or dust before applying the vinyl letters. The great thing about these letters is that they are a little bit wonky, so if you don’t get them on straight, no one will notice.
Rub over the vinyl to help it stick to the wood.
Then, remove the transfer tape. Repeat with all the letters.
Add some craft embellishments like twine, buttons, and bows to the letters.
Use mini hinges to attach the J to the I – the N to the G – and the L to the E. I used an extra hinge as a spacing guide, so all the hinges would be the same distance from the top or bottom.. The hinges go in the wood really easily, so I just used a screwdriver to attach them.
Once all three sets are hinged together, flip the blocks over. Screw on hinges to connect the blocks. You’ll be connecting the I to the N – and the G to the L. 
When you’re done, all the letters should all be connected.
