Since summer vacation is in full swing around here, I’ve decided it’s time to start pulling out the summer decor.  This year, I decided I wanted to make a few new decor items to go on my seasonal shelf.  I’m really excited how each project turned out and I’m excited to share them with you.

Today, I’m showing how to make this cute sign. I kind of love the black and white mixed with the bright colors of the pineapple. Everything just pops. Do you want to make one, too?  You just need a few simple supplies and your Silhouette or Cricut.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO

Back in April when I was making gifts for teacher appreciation week, I found these signs from Dollar Tree. The designs weren’t something I would use, but I thought the frames were really cute for other projects, so I stocked up. If you can’t find these exact frames, they would be pretty easy to make on your own.

To get started, you’ll first need to pull the inside square off of the sign. If the square and the wood block attached to it don’t come off at the same time, just glue them back together.  You just want to make sure you pull both of them off of the frame.

Now, you can paint the frame black.  You’re probably going to need to do 2 coats.  Also, you don’t need to worry about painting over the design, we’ll be covering that later.

Then, paint the square insert white. It will probably take quite a few coats of paint to cover the design (I think it took about 4)

Once the paint has dried, measure the inside of the frame and cut a piece of cardstock to fit.  Then, brush on a layer of mod podge.

Place the cardstock inside the frame. I got my cardstock from this paper pack.

Now, it’s time to start working with the vinyl.

Open the design in your software program.  Measure the little white square and size your design accordingly.  I sized mine at about 3″ x 3″.  Add registrations marks to the design to make layering easy.

Cut out the three different colors of vinyl with your cutting machine and weed away the excess vinyl. Some of the little pieces inside the pineapple are pretty tiny, so pull up the excess vinyl slowly and use your weeding tool to make sure all the pieces stay on the backing.

Cut a piece of transfer tape just a little large than your design.  Place it over the black layer.  Rub over the design to help the vinyl stick to the transfer tape.

Layer the other two colors of vinyl on the transfer tape.

One all the colors are layered, remove the vinyl backing.

Now, center the design over the wood square and press it into place.  Rub over the design with an application tool.  Then, carefully pull off the transfer tape.

Glue the square back into the center of the frame and your new summer sign is done!  Isn’t it cute?
